Japan’s Hokkaido scallop exports to Southeast Asia soar 150%

TOKYO — Japan’s fishing industry is cutting dependence on China for exports and moving quickly to create new processing hubs and sales channels in Southeast Asia, the U.S. and elsewhere with government support.

China imposed a total embargo on Japanese marine products in August 2023 after utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings (TEPCO) released treated radioactive water that accumulated at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.
